Big Media is Big Enough Already!

On November 9, over 1100 people flooded into Seattle’s Town Hall, to send a message to the Federal Communications Commission: big media is big enough already. That was the night of the last and the largest of six public hearings the FCC held across the country, gathering opinions on the issue of media consolidation. Nine hours of testimony at the Seattle hearing left little doubt that the Northwest is unhappy with the state of today’s media landscape – with commercialization gone out of control, with big media’s narrow range of voices and opinions, and with programming that reflects corporate values, not community values.

He Stood Up
The Mistrial of Lt. Ehren Watada

"He Stood UP" is the story of the court martial of Lt. Ehren Watada, and the amazing turn-around that happened in the course of the prosecution's case. The Army claims they are planning to retry Lt. Watada, so he isn't home free, by a long shot, but as this video shows, there can be no doubt that Watada was the clear victor of round one. And for those who want to know more, we include 5 additional Watada pieces by PepperSpray on the disc.

The War Tribunal

In an unprecedented two-day Citizens’ Hearing held in January 2007, more than 600 citizens joined a distinguished tribunal panel in listening to testimony about the legality of the US invasion of Iraq. The Citizens’ Hearing was convened to present evidence that Lt. Ehren Watada would have presented in his court martial on the question of the Iraq War’s legality. Lt. Watada has repeatedly asserted that because the Iraq War is illegal, it is his duty to refuse orders to deploy. He is the Army’s first commissioned officer to take such a stand.

Soldiers & Students

Soldiers & Students is the PepperSpray Collective’s contribution to counter military recruiting. There are 6 individual short pieces on this DVD. Each is strong in its own way. Taken together, they form something more powerful than the sum of its parts. Here is the voice of soldiers and students struggling to find their own moral compass in a time of illegal war and inquisition. With the usual authority figures disgraced, youth are forced to make decisions with life and death consequences. These soldiers and students choose humanity over uniform. This DVD is sharp, powerful, and uplifting.

Ya se Pudo: Radio KCPN Barnraising

Farmworkers and their union, PCUN, have long been excluded from the airwaves in the Willamette Valley. As recently as last April, their money wasn't good enough to buy uncensored radio ads promoting the immigrant march on Mayday. But all that is changing now, with the birth of Radio KPCN, a low power FM station in Woodburn, OR. This video tells the story of the "barnraising" weekend where Prometheus Radio Project and PCUN pulled together to create a whole radio station, almost out of thin air, giving farmworkers a voice on the airwaves where none previously existed. " A portion of the proceeds from this DVD will be sent to Woodburn to help keep Radio KPCN on the air.

Eyewitness in Iraq: Dahr Jamail, an Unembedded Report
A Pepperspray Production, 28 minutes

Dahr Jamail, American independent journalist, has an important story to tell. Recognizing that Americans were being fed a sanitized, propagandistic view of the US occupation of Iraq, he went to Iraq to find the truth. This is his report. After being unembedded in Iraq totaling over 8 months, he returned to the States to tell what he discovered. In this video, created in Seattle by PepperSpray Productions after his most recent return from Baghdad, Dahr Jamail speaks of the horrors of occupation; the use of illegal weapons by American forces; the rip-off of American taxpayers by Bechtel and other US corporations; the shabby coverage of the whole situation by US lapdog media, and of the resilient determination of the Iraqi people to be free from foreign occupation.
